A volunteer oganization at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter

Teaching Kids Kindness

Shelter staff and TSC volunteers have developed a variety of presentations for school and youth group outreach.  Responsible pet ownership and dog bite safety are taught in literacy based programs.  Books such as Before You Were Mine, Buddy Unchained, and "Let's Get a Pup!" said Kate are often incorporated in PowerPoint presentations that encourage discussion of the needs and feelings of animals.  Service projects are encouraged to reinforce lessons.  Our programs meet New York State standards for Health Education and Character Education. Service learning projects count toward community service credits.

For the past two years The Shelter Connection has sponsored humane literacy matching grants offered by Operation Outreach USA.  Through these grants, over 100 students have received books for their home library accompanied by bilingual parent guides.  Their teachers receive lesson plans to help incorporate the OO USA books in their classroom curriculum.

At the Shelter Connection we have a strong belief in reaching out to the next generation of animal lovers teaching respect, responsibility and kindness to all living things.
